“It’s in the journey of discovery that we find ourselves most inspired.”
Wise words. Sensible people. The team at North Coast Wine Company has been growing grapes and producing quality wine in central California for 6 generations. For a family that has spent so long perfecting their product, it’s really the process that they’re most proud of— the relationship to the land, the wading through uncharted waters, the winding path that leads them to their goal.
We crafted a set of labels for North Coast’s new brand—OUTERBOUND—that speaks to the adventurous spirit and hands-on approach of the creators.
Each Viticultural Landscape is unique and shapes the character of the wine itself— the labels had to do the same.
Cue: two months of site observation and information intake, planning, sketching, feature collaging, client collaboration, concept refinement, 6 woodblock carvings, lots of band-aids, lots of fun, 9 finished labels, and one happy client.
Credits:
Logos, labels, artwork, the whole shabang completed while working as a part of Makers & Allies creative team— art directed by the man himself Clint Darby. Vineyard photoshoots meticulously planned and directed by myself and the all-seeing Andrew Layman, shot by photographer Matthew Anderson.
Sketch, digitize, refine, print, sketch, transfer, ink, carve, grimace, ink, print, ink print, smile.
One of the more ambitious printmaking projects I’ve had the pleasure of undertaking; after using artwork for labels, I hand-printed copies of each unique AVA to hang in the tasting room and offices of the North Coast Wine Co.
